Hometown series - Tips for visiting Palembang! (Part 1)
Hello dear readers, today is my second day here, (technically, 1st day), I would love to share you some tips you should prepare for your visit in Palembang! (for tourists) Here we go!
For having been raised for nearly 15 years in Palembang, This city kept a lot of good memories I can blurrily remember 😅. First home, first birthday, first favorite food, first friend turning first best friend, first crush, first winning, first losing, the first in basically everything.
Also for the first time in 4 years, I am here again! So many things have changed since then (changes for the better). Super happy I'll be staying in this city for 10 days! (8 days to be exact, since I left Jakarta by the end of the day and leaving Palembang in the earliest of the day).
Here are my tips!
I would advise everyone to wear sunscreen since the sun shines brighter here than in the capital city. (to protect your skin from the UV) The air is more-too humid, so do expect to feel sticky (from humidity and sweat) and bathe often! One thing that you might complain a lot is the fact that despite of the super hot weather, you can't resist the good foods (which mostly come in all spicy form/ tastier when spicier) and adding more sweat to you!
Second thing is to wear loose shirts, and if you are used to wearing long pants, wear longs to minimize the risk bitten by mosquitos! or any casual clothes (really, you don't really need OOTD here). Just make sure you are comfortable roaming around this city! You don't have to bring all of your shirts here, just wash the shirt you wear on your 1st day, let it dry under the sun and wear it again on your 3rd day. repeat. (the rest of your luggage space can be used to fill in all the foods!) You're very welcome.
Third thing is make sure to have your cash balance on Grab/Gojek enough during your trip. (expect to use this often) #cashless. Or if you visit next year/ during Southeast Asian Games, I assume the LRT-public transportation will start operating during these dates. Oh and please, if you ever find a Becak, try to use once to explore one block (or more) of this city!
Fourth thing is to explore all the foods, from A-Z (I believe whenever you go, most restaurants serve moderately good, acceptable dishes) My favorite picks is the crossroads in the heart of the city, I believe it's around Veteran, or Sudirman, or Letkol Iskandar (please check with the locals, I might be wrong) Palembang is more than just Pempek, we have bunch more foods to be listed down! (I will write down the lists on my next post!)
Fifth thing, dear Jakartans (which I believe most of you are from this city, or from any big cities), don't waste your time in the malls. Explore its culture, the traditional markets, the foods (again), talk to the locals (learn the accents), go to each independent shops along the streets, buy yourself some souvenirs (Songket, coffee, kemplang, varies of cakes, and many more!)
Sixth thing, be aware with your surroundings, pickpockets are everywhere. (I believe this rule applies to everywhere in the world), just to remind you again.
Last thing I warn you is, anyone on diet is prohibited visiting Palembang! if you don't gain any weight, means you don't explore this city enough. Don't worry, the foods worth every kg/pound you gain.
To sum everything up, just prepare your mouth and belly to stock up the good foods. YAY!! ENJOY! ✌
Much love,
Selina

Feeling so thrilled here as I got to explore my childhood memories, meeting my old friends, breathing the air I used to breathe in (ok, I'm being too much), and enjoying every bit of pixelated recall... (I should stop here)
